SERRC/TLC thanks supporters for the GED Graduation, ESL Student Recognition and Awards Ceremony, “Celebrate Success!”

Alaska’s Educational Resource Center and its adult education division, The Learning Connection, held its annual GED Graduation and Awards Ceremony on May 17. This event celebrated the success of 113 Southeast residents who earned their GED diplomas this past year and the accomplishments of 120 English language learners and citizenship students.

TLC wants to specially thank Central Council Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska for their sponsorship of the graduation.

Thank you to Nora Marks Dauenhaur, Alaska State Writer Laureate, who shared words of wisdom and read her wonderful poetry during her commencement address. Student speakers, Salina Thomas, Daniel Williams and Jocelyn Ihnat who offered inspiring stories about their accomplishments and plans for the future.

Thank you to the Juneau Pipe Band for the powerful processional and Woosh.ji.een Dance Group for their joyful celebratory drumming and dancing.

TLC would like to thank the following scholarship donors: University of Alaska Southeast, Tlingit and Haida Vocational Training Resource Center and the A.S.K. foundation. Scholarships will allow students to continue post-secondary education and vocational training.

Thank you to the following businesses and individuals for helping to make TLC’s Graduation and Awards Ceremony a very special event for graduates, their families and friends: Connie Munro and Marie Olson of the Alaska Native Sisterhood for greeting students and their families; Ernie Williams, John James, Edwin Chappell for the great job setting up for the ceremony at the Elizabeth Peratrovich hall; Glacier Gardens, Miss Scarlett’s, Martha’s Flowers, Safeway, Costco, Foodland IGA, Walmart and Fred Meyer helped make the celebration special by donating beautiful flowers and festive cakes; and TLC’s many volunteers who generously share their talents to help students achieve their dreams

In total, TLC served more than 500 adult students this past school year and looks forward to another year helping people build a better life through education.
