Henry James honored by Salvation Army for service

Henry Allen James, center, receives an award for his 25 years of service with the Salvation Army from current Salvatino Army Advisory Board Chair Carol Pitts, left, and former chair, Rep. Cathy Muñoz.

The Juneau Salvation Army Advisory Board recently honored Henry Allen James in celebration of his 25 years with its Juneau Family Store.

State Representative Cathy Muñoz, former Chair of the Advisory Board, presented James with a Legislative Citation. The current Chair, Carol Pitts, on behalf of Advisory Board members, presented him with a plaque and a gift.

James was born and raised in Juneau. His father Gilbert was from Kake, and his mother Winifred was from Klukwan.

James, whom anyone who frequents the Family Store on Willoughby Avenue will know, began his association with the Salvation Army as a caretaker of the church, and then moved across the street to manage the store, which was then called the Thrift Store.

He said he has worked with about a dozen Salvation Army Corps officers in his 25 years. When asked what was the highlight of his career he claimed “being part of the creation of the new store in 2009.”

James supervises the employees and volunteers who keep the Family Store operational. Summer months are the busiest because the cruise ship crews make the Salvation Army their first stop for shopping.

When one enters the Juneau Family Store, one wall of the entry is completed with commemorative tiles purchased by families, businesses, and individuals to help defray the costs of purchasing the land and constructing the new store. Henry is hoping the other wall will be completed by the end of summer, and provides forms for tile dedication-donations at the store. “This is a community effort and it is the community I serve.”
