What's not to like?

Posted: June 8, 2013 - 11:06pm

There is a character in one of my favorite book series that is pretty blunt when she doesn’t like something. Every time she says, “I don’t like creamed peas” or somesuch, her counterpart asks, “Well, then, what DO you like?” and she always has a delightful and whimsical list at the tip of her tongue.

In her quirky and ordinary lists, I appreciate her ability to recognize and appreciate whatever you’d like to call them: gifts, blessings, joys — those things in our lives which can easily be taken for granted or overlooked. She has such fun with her lists, so I thought I’d give it a try:

I like the idea of s’mores more than actual s’mores, used bookstores, and Lady Grey tea.

I like finding a good author and then reading everything he or she wrote.

I like Broadway musicals and the way Johnny Cash sings ‘Solitary Man.’

I like a cappella groups that don’t use a vocal beat box.

I like violets. And daffodils. But not crocuses or tulips. I like the overpowering smell of roses and lilies in a flower shop.

I like the smell of sawdust.

I like being surprised.

I like the baroque artist GianLorenzo Bernini, and baroque musician Handel, and the way both can make me laugh and cry.

I like to buy shoes, but I like going barefoot better.

I like black and white films, and black and white photography.

I like listening to water, from trickling brooks to lapping waves breaking on rocks. Not so much the drip drip drip of a leaky faucet, though. That’s just annoying.

I like puns. I like words more than I like languages — vocabulary is more fun than verb tenses. I want to like poetry, but can never quite connect.

I like to laugh.

I like to teach.

I like to crochet, even though I only know one stitch and so can make anything that is rectangular. I like giving homemade gifts, which are often rectangular afghans and scarves.

I like playing Boggle and Quiddler and cribbage. And Scrabble and Yahtzee and war. And Pictionary and Trivial Pursuit and Bananagrams. I like doing crossword puzzles that are medium hard, if ‘medium hard’ describes the one in the Capitol City Weekly. And the jigsaw puzzles that have the little black cat in them.

I like noisemakers, like kazoos and windchimes and bells. I like the lowing of cruise ship foghorns. I like singing rounds.

I like double-dipped chocolate covered peanuts. I like eel sushi. I only like drinking Pepsi at Wrigley Field. Otherwise, I like Dr. Pepper.

I like to whistle.

I like friends who send me cards. In the mail. With a stamp.

I like the way Prince Charles looks at Camilla, because it’s just like the way my husband looks at me.

Quirky, ordinary, gifts, blessings, joy. What’s on your list?
