Gastineau Community School would like to thank all the businesses and people who helped make our Spring Biking project such a success. First, I would like to thank Cycle Alaska for the company’s help with keeping our bicycles rolling and also to owner John McConnochie for leading many of our young bikers on exploratory trips on the Treadwell Trail. I want to thank Play it Again Sports for working with us to put helmets on the heads of our young riders. I also want to recognize the SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) for awarding us the grant money to purchase bikes and supplies for our students. None of this could have happened, of course, without the support of principal Brenda Edwards and the Gastineau Elementary School staff. I’d particularly like to thank my teaching partner, Patrick Murphy, who put down the guitars, banjos and other instruments he’s usually playing to help with the bicycle project. I also appreciate the staff at the Juneau Community Charter School, who helped get many of their students on wheels with me. Thanks also go to Abby Lowell and Michael Penn for coverage in the Juneau Empire. Finally, I’d like to thank the parents and families and anyone else who made it happen -- and the Juneau Police Department who made sure our Bike to School Day was successful and safe!
