Starr Hill residents, present and past, celebrate Kennedy Street Centennial with block party

Kennedy Street neighbors decided to celebrate the past and organized a block party on June 22. Local photographer Ron Klein took a digital portrait of 112 former and current residents. The youngest was 2-month-old Lucy Rain Stoltz and the oldest was 95-year-old John Daugherty, who raised his six children along with his wife Betty, on Kennedy Street from 1954 to 1977. Efforts are underway to identify everyone in the photo and include the years they lived on Starr Hill as well as their role in the community.

Frank Starr and Dan Kennedy would probably have enjoyed the recent Kennedy Street Centennial Celebration, Claire Richardson said. The Starr Hill neighborhood is named after Frank Starr, and the first Kennedy Street mining cabins were built in 1913. The street was named after Juneau’s night watchman, Dan Kennedy, who died in 1913.

Neighbors would like to thanks everyone who helped with the event including, photographer Ron Klein; graphic artist Jacob Stoltz, who designed the logo; Tom Meyers of Tom’s Pots, who produced the commemorative mugs; the Juneau Economic Development Council and the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council for donating the awnings and tents; Creative Source and Hayden Garrison for numerous tables; the Juneau Parks and Recreation team for sprucing up Chicken Yard Park the day before the party; Pat Henry and Kathy Fanning for music and Ann Metcalfe and Alaska Brewing Company for the beer.

For more information go to Kennedy Street Centennial on Facebook; artifacts found over the years during neighborhood remodels will be photographed and displayed on the page, as well as photos from the event.
