Area students earn honors at GENIUS Olympiad for science and art

Students from area high schools earned recognition recently at the third annual SUNY Oswego GENIUS Olympiad competition for environmental science, art, writing and design.

Sommer Ward of Southeast Alaska Regional Science Fair in Juneau, for a project titled “The Speciation of Sleeper Sharks (Somniosus sp.) in the Bering Sea” in the science category, was awarded an honorable mention,

Kevin Sigler of Southeast Alaska Regional Science Fair in Juneau, for a project titled “Measuring Physiological Parameters in Pacific Blue Mussels (Mytilus trossulus) as a Pilot Study for Establishing a Control Group of Biomarkers in Southeast Alaska” in the science category, was awarded a silver medal.

From June 17 to 20, SUNY Oswego hosted 330 young competitors and 186 of their mentors from 44 countries and 30 states — all finalists in a worldwide competition that attracted nearly 1,000 participants from 57 nations and 37 states.

Entries in the scholarly competition spanned environmental quality, ecology and biodiversity, resources and energy, and human ecology.

With sponsorship of SUNY Oswego, Terra Science and Education Foundation, National Grid, SRC Inc., Pathfinder Bank, Destiny USA, C&S Companies and Ricoh, GENIUS honorees took home prizes as well as certificates and medals. They also attended opening and closing ceremonies, a symposium on learning and an international cultural fair at the college’s Campus Center, and made a day trip to Niagara Falls and Syracuse’s Destiny USA before departing June 21 for a trip to Washington, D.C.
