DIPAC thanks our community volunteers

DIPAC would like to thank the special volunteers who helped make our education and community events a great success so far this year.

Our annual spring Seaweek program was held April 9-19 in conjunction with the Juneau School District. Over 540 students and adults visited the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery Visitor Center to participate in these classes. DIPAC sincerely thanks the following folks for helping make our 2013 Seaweek field trip program so successful: Princess Tours for providing transportation for the school classes, Linda Harris of the Juneau School District for her coordination of the Seaweek program, and all the teachers, parents and friends who provided guidance for the students during the field trips. A special praise goes to our community volunteers who shared their love of marine biology with our students: Aaron Baldwin, George Bonnett, Don Greenberg, Mark and Betty Johnson, and Noah Machakos.

Our community open house for Juneau Appreciation Day was held May 4 and drew about 600 people to check out the hatchery visitor center and enjoy food, craft activities, the aquariums and our special touch tank. Special thanks go to our community and student volunteers who helped with our family activities: Aaron Baldwin, Emma Hopkins, Chance, Michelle and Paul Turinsky, Lisa Ward, Adrianne and Stephen Vandervegt, and Adrian Wilson.

Additional volunteers greatly aided our various other community outreach events including family nights and a rally program at Auke Bay, Gastineau, Harborview and Riverbend schools, Discovery Day at Eaglecrest, the Juneau Maritime Festival, UAS “Kids2 College” program, and the UAS Community Day. These were: Barbara Bechtol, Trish Dearing, Don Greenberg, Kinsey Hess, Emma Hopkins, Jeff Nichols, Rhys Smoker, Dan Teske, John Tomaro, Barb and Stephen Vandervegt, and Adrian Wilson.

Equally appreciated are our student and community volunteers who helped maintain the aquariums and collect specimens for our aquariums and touch tanks this year: Aaron Baldwin, Barbara Bechtol, George Bonnett, Travis Brososky, Larry Edfelt, Jamalea Godfrey, Don Greenberg, Emma Hopkins, Mark and Betty Johnson, Jake Lewis, Noah Machakos, Charlie Martelle, Ashley McCarty, Collin McNeen, Adam Messmer, Mark Sanders, Fletcher Sewall, Annette Smith, Trevor Smith, Marsha, Owen and Steve Squires, John Tomaro, Adrian and Craig Wilson, and Nick Yurko. Special thanks to JDHS Project Choice students Devin Hammonds and Jeffrey Isturis for their faithful service this last school year. Opportunities for many of our student volunteers were provided through cooperative partnerships with Juneau-Douglas, Thunder Mountain, and Yaakoosge Daakahidi high schools, for which we are most appreciative. Opportunities for several of these volunteers were also provided through a cooperative partnership with REACH.

We welcome volunteers who would like to assist with our ongoing education and community outreach programs and aquarium collection and maintenance activities. For further information, contact Rich Mattson at 463-1630 or email at rich_mattson@dipac.net.
