Beating the odds together

Cancer Connection’s Beat the Odds Race Against Cancer was successfully held on Aug. 17 with a record number of participants! It’s more than just a 2 mile walk or 5K run — it a place and time to come together to encourage others and to be encouraged. Cancer is an unexpected visitor in many of our lives or our loved ones and having a support system in place is vital.

We would like to thank the community of Juneau for making our “Beat the Odds” run/walk a great success. We had nearly 500 bright-eyed folks gathering — all for a worthy cause. Although this is advertised as a women’s race, we wholeheartedly welcome all the men who want to run or walk in support of their mothers, sisters, wives or friends.

We had incredible support from the business community and would like to gratefully thank our sponsors and supporters for their contributions. Our sponsers included Alaska Airlines, Alaskan Outdoor Wearhouse & Embroidery, Anchor Electric, Bartlett Regional Hospital Foundation, Baxter Bruce & Sullivan, Central Council Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, Diagnostic Radiology Consultants, Elgee Rehfeld Mertz, Fox River, GCI, Inland Boatmen’s Union, Interdesign, Juneau Bone & Joint Center, Juneau Radio Center, KATH-TV, K3 Radio, Longaberger – Northern Lights Team Juneau, McDonald’s, Nell Ann Wagoner, M.D., Nugget Alaskan Outfitters, Printing Trade Company, RE/MAX of Juneau, Sealaska, Southeast Medical Clinic, Super Bear, Valley Medical Care and Valley Paint Center. Our Supporters include Alaska Pacific Bank, Bartlett Regional Hospital, Foggy Mountain, JRC – The Alaska Club, Northland Services, Kristel at The Grind Coffee, Mendenhall Auto Center, Northern Sales, Pavitt Health & Fitness, Tyler Rental Inc, Phil Paramore at UAS Rec Center and United Way.

We generously received donations for door prizes from Alaska Airlines, Columbia Sportswear, Eaglecrest – Jeffra Clough, Foggy Mountain, JRC – The Alaska Club, Longaberger – Northern Lights Team Juneau, Longaberger – Susan Oelklaus, Pavitt’s Health & Fitness, Raintree Quilting, Shoefly and TLC Massage – Traci Gilmour. We must not forget all the quality socks donated by Fox River, a much sought after prize for finishing the walk or run.

An event such as this is only possible through the help of many, many volunteers before, during, and after the day of event. We thank those special folks from Elgee Rehfeld Mertz (Theresa Harris, Karen Tarver, Amber Leblanc and Kristina Paulick) who flawlessly handled the flurry of registration, Cathy Tide and all her fearless team of race timers (Abbey Cummings, Dan Bruce, Jim Grammel, Melanie White, Barb Bonner, Sherry Tamone, Glenn Frick and Sandi Pahlke), Charlene Morrison and T-shirt rolling team (Lorie Daniels, Richard Hitchcock, Jamie Gates, Teresa Robinson, Brooke Gunstrom, Chris Urata and Alyssa Hobbs), Cancer Connection Board Members (Tish Satre, Pat Yearty, Deb Chalmers, Sandra Bleicher, Nicole Hallingstad and Mark Mickleson), Extra hands wherever needed (Fred Schmitz, Jake Yearty, David Bleicher), Charlie Williams, Shannon West, Larry O’Keefe, Klas Stolpe – Juneau Empire, and many other individuals who stepped in where help was needed.

Funds raised from this event stay right here in Southeast Alaska, giving assistance to those dealing with cancer and their families. We also sponsor education programs and awareness events with the intent of prevention and early detection of cancer.

Thank you Juneau. See you at next year’s Beat the Odds event.
