The Fil-Com. Inc. of Juneau, a non-profit organization, has awarded 43 scholarships to middle school, high school and college students during the Scholarship Awards Night held at the FCI Hall on Aug. 17. One of FCI’s missions is to promote educational opportunities for its young members in order to preserve the rich Filipino heritage, culture and tradition.
The criteria for selections are based on grade points average, co-curricular activities, community service and membership attendance. Scholarship recipients have demonstrated commitment to give back to the community, leadership ability, high academics and athletics potential.
Through the generosity of the FCI, the Scholarship Program offered four scholarship categories: Initial College, Books and Transportation Allowance, Student Athlete Incentive and Savings Incentive. Fil-Com. Inc. awarded at least $13,000 in scholarships.

The Initial College Scholarships were awarded to: Christianne Mariano, Talyn Ramos and Dillon Tomaro.
The Books and Transportation Allowances were awarded tos: Edmar Carrillo, Jericho Cristobal, Mariel Enriquez, Mark Enriquez, Maylinda Rose Suson and Linsey Tomaro.
The Student Athlete Incentives for middle school were awarded to: Patrick Escorrido, Phillip Escorrido, Philip Gonzales, John Hamrick, Kaia Hamrick, Kamy Hamrick, Ciera Kelly, Sammy McKnight, Patrick Minch, Talyn Ramos, Treyson Ramos, Rachelle Roldan, Mia Ruffin, Dillon Tomaro and Israel Yadao.
The Savings Incentives for middle school were awarded to: Patrick Escorrido, Phillip Escorrido, Philip Gonzales, Spence Gonzales, John Hamrick Kaia Hamrick, Kamy Hamrick, Ciera Kelly, Sammy McKnight, Patrick Minch, Talyn Ramos, Treyson Ramos, Rachelle Roldan, Mia Ruffin, Nanette Solanoy, RJ Solanoy, Mariah Soriano, Dillon Tomaro and Israel Yadao.
“I am thankful for getting a scholarship because it means a lot to me that I’m getting money for doing things I love to do, like swim and get good grades. So thank you FilCom, Inc!” Mia Ruffin, Scholarship Recipient for Student Athlete Incentive and Savings Incentive, said.
The Scholarship Committee Members are Nove Barril, Arnel Raymundo and Delma Siangco.

The guest speaker for the evening was Chancellor John Pugh of University of Alaska Southeast. Pugh gave an inspirational speech to all the scholars.
Scholars, parents and guests also watched photo slides of recipients’ individual accomplishments. To end the evening, the scholars played some friendly games, in which the winning team indulged on candy.
