I am writing this letter to share some wonderful news. The Hames Center is the gym located on the historic Sheldon Jackson College campus in Sitka. We have been open and thriving for the past two and a half years, thanks to 500 members and over 20,000 volunteer hours. It runs like a co-op, with membership dollars going directly to operational costs. Because of this, our facility belongs to every person who walks through our doors and we work hard to offer members a healthy, happy fitness experience.
As the Hames Center Director, I would like to send a huge thank you to the Juneau Community Foundation and the Douglas-Dornan Foundation Fund for believing in this project and awarding us two grants over our early years. This support has invigorated our membership and sent a strong message to the people of Sitka. Thanks to the Douglas-Dornan Foundation Fund, we have built a wonderful climbing/traversing wall and now we are able to develop our children’s activity room. These funds are instrumental in creating and supporting healthier families. This generosity makes a meaningful difference here in Sitka and this kind of outreach will impact hundreds of lives for years to come.
Thank you to all the dedicated people that make this foundation so effective and powerful.
Cindy Edwards, Hames Center Director
