Light the Night Walk Oct. 3

Light the Night is the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual fundraising walk and the nation’s night to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling blood cancers. This year’s walk will begin at Marine Park at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 3. The walk is 1.5 miles and there will also be a shorter route available. Walkers should arrive at Marine Park at 6 p.m. to register.

Each fall, teams of friends, families, and co-workers raise funds for cancer research. On walk night, they gather in towns across America. Walking in the twilight, they hold illuminated balloons — white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of someone lost.

The Light the Night Walk is hosted by the Confidential Employees Association. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma; and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. More than one million Americans have leukemia, myeloma or lymphoma. Every four minutes, someone is newly diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every ten minutes someone loses his or her life. Among children under 20, leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society provides education programs, support groups and financial aid to patients and families across the state of Alaska.

The walk is open to all ages and does not require a particular level of fitness. Last year, more than 200,000 people in approximately 250 communities across the United States and Canada participated in a Light the Night Walk. Participants are encouraged to invite family, friends, co-workers and neighbors.
