National Coming Out Day

The second March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights took place on Oct. 11, 1987. This demonstration brought half a million people from various LGBT organizations from across the country to come together at our nation’s capital to protest and spread awareness of the national oppression of the LGBT community. Enthusiasm following what became known as “the Great March” and the many rallies that followed led a number of advocates to push for an annual day to celebrate the act of coming out and to recognize the courage, and sometimes the struggles, associated with being honest with oneself, their family and their community. The first National Coming Out Day was on the Oct. 11, 1988, the one-year anniversary of “the Great March”.

In celebration of National Coming Out Day in Juneau, there will be a public screening of the film White Frog at the University of Alaska Southeast Student Recreation Center at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, brought to you by the UAS Gay-Straight Alliance and SEAGLA (South East Alaska Gay & Lesbian Alliance). Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. Concessions will be sold by UAS Gay-Straight Alliance members. Come out and enjoy a positive film with friends to recognize and share National Coming Out Day 2013.
