Marella Gumgob has earned the rank of Shodan — first-degree black belt — at the Juneau Shotokan Karate club following examinations with Sensei Cathy Cline.

Cline is an eighth-degree black belt and Regional Director of the Northwest Region for the International Shotokan Karate Federation.

Kiana Potter was the recipient of the Cheryl Phillips Spirit Award for going above and beyond while attending the Alaska Regional Karate Camp outside of Anchorage.

Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art founded by Master Gichin Funakoshi. The ISKF-affiliated Juneau Shotokan Karate-Do Club has been operating continuously in Juneau since 1983. Everyone from age seven and older is welcome, and families are encouraged to train together.
