The Mendenhall Flying Lions will host their 18th annual barbecue and fundraiser noon Saturday, Nov. 2, at McGivney’s Sports Bar & Grill. Featuring smoked pork ribs, potato salad and beans, the event, a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association and local Lions Club projects, will go until the food is gone. Takeout plates, racks of ribs and sides will be available. A $15 donation gets attendees a plate.
In conjunction with the barbecue, at 5 p.m., the Lions Club will launch its inaugural dessert auction — donations may still be accepted, contact Neil Atkinson at 723-9168.
Last year’s event raised more than $20,000, with more than $145,000 raised over the last 17 years. Funds will help the American Diabetes Association send kids from Southeast to diabetes camp and conduct health fairs throughout Southeast, as well as allowing the Lions Club to provide vision screenings and cater to other community needs.
In years past, the barbecue has included a large auction with donations from community members and local businesses, but due to the success of the event, the auction will occur separately in the Spring of 2014.
