The Juneau Teen Council was recently awarded a grant from the Great Blue Heron Fund of the Juneau Community Foundation. We are both honored and grateful to be the recipient of this contribution from generous donors who support positive programs in Alaska.
Teen Council is a peer education program sponsored by Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest. Our mission is to empower teenagers to educate their peers, families, and communities about human sexuality and healthy decision making and inspire teens to use their voices to advocate for just and humane sexual attitudes and policies. Juneau Teen Council members receive in-depth and on-going training on a variety of topics such as healthy sexuality, pregnancy prevention, race and diversity, peer education, sexually transmitted infection prevention, public speaking, intimate partner violence and healthy relationships. With support they are able to present as volunteer educators and act as resources for sexual health information and youth focused community services.
Currently Teen Council members are busy preparing for their first peer presentation on Healthy Relationships, attending the Lead On! for Peace and Equality conference in Anchorage, and preparing to be teen presenters at the upcoming 2013 Prevention Summit: Putting Prevention to Work – Alaskan Communities in Action. The grant awarded by the Great Blue Heron Fund will be used to sustain Teen Council programming by providing weekly trainings for members, community presentations, and youth outreach in the community.
We are very appreciative to the Great Blue Heron Fund and the Juneau Community Foundation for their commitment to the health and wellbeing of the youth, and future, of Juneau!
Thank you so much for your support!
