The 30th Academic Decathlon Southeast Regional Tournament happened over the weekend and our very own JDHS decathlete, Michielle Corpuz, garnered the highest overall score for the tournament trouncing the rest of the decathletes from Craig, Ketchikan, and Metlakatla.
I have many people to thank for this successful meet:
Many thanks to the following community members who opened their homes to our visiting students: Rena Brown, Bruce Botelho, Don Campbell, Barb Bonner, Barb Conant, Joe Nelson, Christina Rich and Sasha Soboleff.
Without the following judges, many parents of current and former decathletes, who gave up their Saturday morning, we couldn’t have completed the Speech and Interview section of the competition: Alex and Carole Bookless, Rena Brown, LeeAnn Dickson, Matt and Sharon Fishel, Bridget Fenerty, Glenn Gelbrich, Robin MacDonald, Patty Newman, Kat Palmer, Christina Rich, Doreen Shaw, Jeff Short, Brita Steinberger, Russell Strandtmann and Wendy Whelan.
Special thanks goes to Jane Ginter who, for the past several years, generously gives of her time to our activity as she manages our hospitality room and tallies our scores throughout the tournament.
As always, Sandi Wagner works reliably in the background to make sure we have everything we need for the tourney.
Thanks to Patty Gerdes and Jeff Short who tirelessly assist in preparing the students for every competition.
If you have a child who is interested in Academic Decathlon, please send him or her my way. We welcome anyone who enjoys learning for the sake of learning and competing for the sake of mental fitness and fun. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org.
