Audible Art of Place series continues Friday with "Telling History"

The second installment in the Audible Art of Place presentation series will be held this Friday, Feb. 21, in the Glacier View Room at the University of Alaska Southeast. Friday’s event will be Audible Art of Place: Telling History, and will feature a discussion by Tlingit elders and historians about the purpose and meaning of oral history-keeping in the Tlingit culture. This presentation will begin at 10 a.m. and is free and open to the public.

This is the fourth season of the Art of Place lecture series, founded by UAS professor Ernestine Hayes. Each installment offers an in-depth look at certain aspects of Tlingit culture and allows members of the public to hear prominent community members’ personal stories and thoughts on these subjects.

The series will continue March 28 with Audible Art Of Place: Song, featuring Tlingit scholar Liana Wallace (Raven) and Tlingit leader Lyle James (Eagle), who will discuss and demonstrate songs and the method by which old and new songs are kept alive. This event will also begin at 10 a.m. in the Glacier View Room.

The final event, Audible Art of Place: Happy Time, is scheduled for Friday, April 25, and will feature Yukon Tlingit Sharon Shorty, sometimes known as Gramma Susie, who will share her humor, stories and performance. The venue for this presentation will be announced at a later date.

This year’s series began Jan. 31 with Audible Art Of Place: Oratory and featured Tlingit elder Paul Marks (Raven) and Standing Rock Sioux writer and storyteller Mona Susan Power, who discussed and demonstrated the purpose and meaning of oratory among indigenous cultures.
