Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies (AWARE), Inc. and Juneau’s Violence Prevention Coalition would like to thank everyone who attended this year’s “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” 4th annual one mile walk and 5K run to raise awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault in Juneau. More than 60 people came out to show their support of preventing gender violence in their community.
The event capped off Sexual Assault Awareness Month, observed throughout the month of April. A 2011 Juneau victimization survey showed that of every 100 adult women who live in the City and Borough of Juneau, 47 have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV), 35 have experienced sexual violence (SV), and 55 have experienced IPV, SV, or both, within their lifetimes. At AWARE this fiscal year — July 1, 2013 through March 31, 2014 — we have provided 5,916 nights of safe shelter for 115 women and 73 children.
Thank you to Super Bear, Heritage Coffee, the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council, Nugget Alaskan Outfitter, The Alaska Club and Pavitt’s Health and Fitness. A special thank you, also, to Southeast Road Runner’s Paul DeSloover, who helped coordinate the event, including some important last minute adjustments due to the arrival of an unscheduled cruise ship that arrived in downtown last weekend.
