Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive thank you

Posted: May 18, 2014 - 12:02am

Thank you, Juneau and Douglas residents!

Again the people of Juneau and Douglas gave what they could to help feed our local people who need it the most. I am pleased to tell you that your United States Postal Service Mail Carriers of Juneau and Douglas collected over 4,800 pounds of food from the mail boxes during our “Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive” that is held on the second Saturday of May each year. This year the food drive was held on Saturday May 10. This was the 22nd year that the National Association of Letter Carriers in cooperation with the National Rural Carriers Association and the United States Post Office have conducted the “Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.”

We knew that collecting the food from our customers’ mail boxes and delivering it to our local food banks here in Juneau would help fill up some of the empty shelves at the Southeast Alaska Food Bank and at the Helping Hands Food Bank. During the summer months the schools are out and the children are no longer eating breakfast and lunch at school, so there is a higher need for food in the summer months at the food banks.

We also would like to thank the Juneau Empire newspaper and Wayne A. Stevens, President /CEO of the United Way of Southeast Alaska, for helping to get the word out and requesting volunteers to help out, Jeff Brown and Pete More at KTOO, all the folks at TAKU 105 FM and affiliated stations for airing our event on the radio stations. Also we want to thank Fred Meyer, IGA, Wal-Mart, Rainbow foods, Safeway and Super Bear, for allowing us to place a postal hamper or empty tubs in their stores to collect food for those people who want to participate but don’t have a mail box, and Troop Leader Julie Atkinson and her daughter Jade Atkinson from Girl Scout Troop 4002 for helping to unload and sort the food. Thanks to the National Association of Letter Carriers for their donation of doughnuts and pizza to feed our carriers and clerks to give them the extra energy to collect all that food, and thanks to our Postmaster Susan Johnson for allowing the Juneau and Douglas mail carriers, clerks and all the other postal employees to participate in this nation-wide event. Last but not least, thanks to all who gave food during our 2014 “Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive” because without your donations we wouldn’t have been able to help feed the families in need.

With Much Gratitude,

Mark J. Piotrowski

NALC 2014 Food Drive Representative for Juneau, Alaska
