The front property of Glacier Smoothie Soaps looked more like a street festival than an awards ceremony Wednesday, but the live music and acrobatic acts of the local jumpers were there to celebrate Glacier Smoothie Soaps’ achievement of receiving the Better Business Bureau’s 2014 Alaska Business of the Year Torch Award.
Glacier Smoothie Soaps was selected as the Alaska business of the year based on the BBB’s accreditation standards and the business’ commitment to customer needs.
The business motto for Glacier Smoothie Soaps, “Do unto others as you would want done unto you,” is what made their application stand out, according to the BBB.
According to a press release from BBB, “Glacier Smoothie Soaps outlines its dedication to ‘doing the right thing.’ Whether it is taking lost tourists back to their ships, driving customers down to the drugstore or sweeping the sidewalk in front of neighbors’ stores, the company’s commitment to its shop, its town and its customers shines bright.”
GSS is a third-generation, family-run store.
“The Better Business Bureau is the authority of what is good and what is right and the way to do business,” said Stacie Varner, production manager of Glacier Smoothie Soaps. “We are so honored and humbled by this, and we’re just excited to be associated with them.”
As for what the award means for the store, besides having BBB accreditation, it adds a little pressure to keep getting better.
“We’ve tried to be good people and treat others really well all along,” said Varner. “And now there’s some pressure to keep doing that, but we can keep it up, and also keep our quality and standards high to keep (customers) happy with us.”
The BBB honors businesses that demonstrate excellence in the marketplace and chooses businesses that will further that goal. With the acceptance of the Torch Award, Glacier Smoothie Soaps will become an official BBB accredited business.
