Alaska Native Sisterhood centennial celebration and election results

The Alaska Native Sisterhood commemorated their centennial celebration in Wrangell Oct. 7-10 The Wrangell ANS Camp 1 and Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 4 hosted.

The organization had 44 resolutions that were submitted at the convention dealing with State, federal, fisheries, tribal, health, education and internal issues.

The next convention was approved by the delegates to be in Juneau, hosted by ANB and ANS Camp 70 from Oct 4 -7 in 2016.

The Grand Camp begins a new year with changes to their officers.

Sasha Soboleff, son of Dr. Walter Soboleff, begins as the new ANB grand president. Soboleff is from Camp 76 Tenakee Springs. Ross Nannauck III from the Petersburg Camp won the position of 1st vice president, while Wilbur Brown from Sitka Camp 2 won the 2nd vice president. Peter Naoroz from Camp 70 Juneau ran unopposed and returns as the ANB grand secretary, as did Colette Buchanan as ANB grand treasurer from the Portland Camp and Charles Streuli from the Petersburg camp for sergeant at arms.

Not serving in the 2015-2016 terms was Eric Morrison, grand president from Camp 70. Eric was inducted into the ANB executive officers (past presidents) during the installation program on Oct. 10. Also leaving the leadership team was Marvin Adams from the Anchorage Camp.

Returning from the ANS executive officers to serve as the new ANS grand president was Johanna Dybdahl from the Hoonah Camp. Also returning from the ANS executive officers was Mary Brown from Klawock Camp to serve as the 1st vice president. Rounding out 2nd vice president comes Paulette Moreno from the Sitka Camp. Retaining her seat as ANS grand secretary is Carol Duis from the Haines Camp. Cynthia Llanos from the Ketchikan Camp was unanimously voted to retain her seat as ANS grand treasurer. Joining leadership as ANS grand sergeant at arms is Janet Burke (Dr. Walter Soboleff’s daughter) from Tenakee Springs.

Also not serving this term was Freda Westman from the Juneau Camp 70 who was welcomed to the ANS executive committee. Beverley Russell from Juneau Camp 70 who served as the ANS 1st vice president, asked to step back to take some personal time from her leadership role. Marina Rose Anderson from the Klawock Camp served as ANS sergeant at arms last year but has stepped back to continue her education on the east coast.
