TMHS art students have winning year

Veronica Salter has been honored for her National Jr. Duck Stamp painting earlier this year. In addition to Salter’s “Best of Show,” the following Thunder Mountain High School students brought home ribbons: First Place — Amber Rounds-McPherson, Tianah Sangster and Audrey Schick; Second Place — Brandon Allen, Jasz Garrett and Catherine Johnson; Third Place — Jonallen Eshnaur and Jennifer Sanchez. Tianah Sangster also placed first for her conservation message.

Nine TMHS students attended Art Fest in Petersburg. Madison Gilberto brought home “Best Home Brought Art” award for her pencil drawing “My Mona Lisa Wears Short Shorts.” Class awards also went to Sarah Graber, Veronica Salter, Amber Rounds-McPherson and Carissa Armstrong.

To wrap up the year, TMHS students had their First Friday show in May in downtown Juneau. In addition to the above mentioned art, students from Digital Arts classes displayed their digital art, among which were pieces by Michael Julson, Elizabeth Staveland, Cameron Okins, Spencer Stratton and Nicole Carrillo-Aguilar, William Weinlaeder, Tucker Kelly and Sonny Mauricio.

Spencer Stratton’s amazing composition “Flower in Me” brought him first place and a gold medal in All State Art Competition in digitally enhanced photography.

Elizabeth Staveland’s “The Guardian” along with the state Honorable Mention brought her national recognition — her work was accepted for publishing in National “Celebrating the Arts” collection. Another TMHS digital artist, senior Sonny Mauricio — who became known over the past four years for his work in award-winning yearbook graphic design and video production — again won a medal in the state competition with 2017 Yearbook cover. Last year, Sonny took both state and national awards for “Best Yearbook Cover Design,” so this year is his third in a row to receive outstanding awards.

Lake Siner won “Best of Show” in the ASAA-All State Art Competition for his ceramic set, Weathered Worlds. Placing with Honorable Mention Awards were Sarah Graber and Catherine Johnson for a collaboration piece, ASG Logo, and Veronica Salter for her Duck Stamp entry.

Angela Imboden is an art teacher at TMHS, and Janna Lelchuk is TMHS’ Digital Arts Teacher.
