UAS offers new undergraduate fisheries degree

The University of Alaska Southeast and the University of Alaska Fairbanks have received approval for a new undergraduate fisheries degree.

On Oct. 31, UAS announced that the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities has approved a joint Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, with a concentration in Fisheries Science.

According to the university, the new degree is intended to increase the number of opportunities for Alaskans interested in pursuing a career in the fishing industry.

Students will be able to complete the degree at UAS, taking classes on the UAS campus and at the Lena Point university campus, which is technically part of UAF.

According to the university, “UAS and UAF expect an increase in the number of students that enroll in the fisheries and ocean sciences degrees now that the joint program has been approved.”

Students can begin enrolling in classes for the new degree in spring 2018.
