Students across the state spent the month of October learning about and monitoring their energy usage, and one Juneau classroom was honored for its efforts.
Kevin Hamrick’s first-period class at Floyd Dryden Middle School was named Juneau’s Regional Winner in the 2017 Power Pledge Challenge, and was one of five classrooms in the state to win awards. A sixth-grade class from Palmer Junior Middle School won the statewide award. More than 3,600 students from 131 classrooms across the state participated.
The challenge is part of Energy Awareness Month, which is recognized every October. Students completed a hands-on activity from the AK Energy Smart curriculum, learned how to calculate their energy usage and discovered ways to use energy more efficiently at home. The students’ homework included conducting an online home energy audit with their families to identify specific actions that their families could take to reduce energy usage.
Each winning classroom received a pizza party and/or a tour of a local power plant.
