Juneau port, harbor earn engineering awards

Juneau ports and harbors were recognized with several awards by industry groups this year. Recognition came from the States Organization for Boating Access (SOBA), Engineering News Record (ENR), the Society of American Military Engineers and Pile Driver Contractor Association (PDCA). The Port of Juneau Cruise Ship Berths project was the most decorated, collecting five honors.

The Statter Harbor Boat Launch Replacement project received an Outstanding Project award from SOBA in August. The City and Bureau of Juneau entered into a cooperative agreement with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) to fund the replacement of the existing Don. D. Statter Memorial Boat Harbor boat launch. The old deteriorated ramp, built in 1986, was recently replaced with a new two-lane, all tide boat launch ramp including a new American Disabilities Association compliant boarding float. The new ramp has increased the boat launch capacity and in combination with the new parking area has decreased wait times and congestion and improves safety.

Northwest Best Projects competition awarded the Port of Juneau Cruise Ship Berths, which took top honors in both the Best Airport/Transit and Best Specialty Contracting divisions. The Port of Juneau Cruise Ship Berths subsequently won two additional 2017 Best Projects Awards.

The Port of Juneau project designed two new cruise ship berths to accommodate cruise ships up to 1,100 feet long with varying widths and offloading configurations. The Juneau Cruise Ship Berths project was also named 2017 PDCA Project of the Year in the Associate/Engineering Affiliate category. This award, announced in September, highlighted the project’s use of a pile-supported solution to address access, mooring and breasting structures over deep water.
