More than 30 Juneau area residents attended the Feb. 16-18 Southeast Alaska Garden Conference held in Haines, for which Jeff Lowenfels (award-winning long-time Alaska garden columnist and author) was keynote speaker.

The three-day conference on growing local produce in our short challenging growing season focused on gardening practices, storage and preservation, composting, food security, and soil health. Conference speakers from Juneau who focused on home use and small-scale farms included Darren Snyder (Southeast Alaska Cooperative Extension Agent), Joe Orsi (Orsi Organic Produce), Ed Buyarski (Ed’s Edible Landscaping), Dave Love (Root Seller Farm), Samia Savell and Will Murray (USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service), Colin Peacock (Salt and Soil Marketplace), Lia Heifetz (Southeast Alaska Watershed Council), and Wallace “Sandy” Williams (Juneau Master Gardener).
