Region’s Democrats get new party leadership

The Tongass Democrats have named a new chairman. On April 5, Edric Carrillo replaced longtime chair Nancy Courtney. Also at the meeting, Democrats elected Brenda Knapp vice-chair, Elisa Gaytan as secretary, and Will Kronick as treasurer.

The Tongass Democrats are the Democratic Party organization for House Districts 33 and 34 (Senate District Q), including Juneau, Douglas, Haines, Skagway, Gustavus, Klukwan and Excursion Inlet.

Carrillo, 24, is a staffer for Rep. Sam Kito III, D-Juneau, and the youngest person to serve as the chair of the organization.

He is a Juneau-Douglas High School graduate (class of 2012). Carrillo attended Colorado Mesa University, and is enrolled at the University of Alaska Southeast seeking a bachelor’s of social science degree with an emphasis in political science.

He is a member of the Filipino Community Board of Directors (Outreach/Public Relations), a member of the City and Borough of Juneau’s Parks and Rec Advisory Committee, CBJ Youth Activities Board, and former House District 34 Young Democrat representative.
