Floyd Dryden seventh-grader Jager David Hunt has won the art contest promoting the 27th annual Family Fishing Day at the Lake. This year’s event is June 2 at Twin Lakes.

Juneau-Gastineau Rotary (one of five Rotary clubs in Juneau) sponsors a competition in conjunction with the Juneau School District to select artwork to promote the Day at the Lake. Hunt’s entry was selected from among about 70 entries.

The 27th annual Family Fishing Day at the Lake puts kids front and center — beginning with promotion of the event.

JGR President-Elect Kim Kiefer called Jager’s winning entry “relevant.” The poster references Project Playground (the campaign to rebuild the play equipment at Twin Lakes) and a cultural design, apropos to Celebration, which begins the following week.

David and his teacher, Kaia Henrickson each received $100 from JGR. David’s work can be seen on promotional posters around town.

Several other students’ work was honored for artistic merit:

• Michael Juleson, Thunder Mountain senior

• Kayleigh Newport, Montessori eighth grader

• Jericho Beaird, Riverbend fourth grader

• Liliane Veikoso, Glacier Valley third grader

Day at the Lake is managed by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, which provides all fishing gear, boats and life vests. (Alaska youths under 18 do not require a sportfishing license.) Douglas Island Pink and Chum loads the lakes with baby king salmon. Local merchants, including Super Bear, Fred Meyer, Flying Squirrel, IGA and others, contribute hot dogs and other items prepared and sold by Juneau-Gastineau Rotary. A variety of kids’ games also are offered in the play area. Families are invited to fish for free from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
