SITKA — Dennis Baker knew exactly where he wanted to go when he left thae Oosterdam ferry for the short boat ride to Sitka on Thursday.

In Alaska for the first time, along with his girlfriend Norma Jean Harstvedt, Baker walked over to Centennial Hall, where a World War II Navy uniform worn by his father is the centerpiece of a new exhibit at the Sitka Historical Museum.

Owen Baker was a seaman first class who served on the USS Sitka, a navy attack transport ship.

Kids coming into any of the three public libraries this summer may enter a weekly drawing for prizes donated by local businesses. To enter the drawing, write a book review on forms available at the library or online at www.juneau.org/library.

This program is open to all kids through teens.

Marie Drake to host retro sci-fi night Tuesday

Atomic tests in New Mexico create giant, man-eating ants that threaten civilization — at least for a couple of hours, as Marie Drake Planetarium will show the 1954 sci-fi film “Them” at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Attendees at this free event are encouraged to wear costumes. All ages are welcome, and hard chairs will be provided. However, guests can bring a blanket or more comfortable chair if they’d like.

LOS ANGELES — You and your dog are headed to the beach — for a day, a few days at a pet-friendly resort or a week at a friend’s beachfront home. What can you expect besides hot sand and salty water?

In a word: Wildlife.

Sea gulls are found in large, loud flocks at nearly every ocean in the world. Sea stars (historically called starfish) are found on both coasts. Sand crabs feed where the waves break on the Pacific coast and horseshoe crabs live in the shifting sands of the Atlantic coast.
