Patricia Morgan is still haunted by the drowning death of a promising young athlete in Haines’ icy waters — there was nothing that could be done to save him, but there is plenty that can be done to prevent more drowning deaths.
Prevention is all about education. Southeast Alaska residents should know how to swim and, more importantly, how to save themselves in the region’s unforgiving waters.
“I just know kids need to learn to swim,” Morgan said. “A good percent of these kids don’t know how to swim, and very few are on a swim team.”
