Lemon Creek Area Plan available for public comment

Starting today, Juneau residents can share their thoughts on the future of the Lemon Creek area.

The City and Borough of Juneau has put together a draft plan that will serve as a blueprint for the future of the Lemon Creek area, and from today until Sunday, July 30, the public can share its comments on the plan.

People don’t need to live in Lemon Creek to share their thoughts, Senior Planner and Project Manager for the Lemon Creek Area Plan Jill Maclean said in a release.

“This is a community-based planning process,” Maclean said, “and we welcome feedback from you all, from youth to adults.”

This plan provides a 20-year vision for the Lemon Creek and Switzer Creek areas from Fred Meyer to Vanderbilt Road. The plan looks to promote neighborhoods, identify a future location for the landfill, improve Capital Transit bus schedules and create public parks among other priorities. It also looks to “knit” the area together through the use of pedestrian bridges and other techniques.

A 12-person steering committee — one that includes residents, property owners and business owners in Lemon Creek — put the plan together with the help of multiple community meetings.

After the public comment period is finished, the steering committee will meet in August to examine the feedback before making changes and taking the plan to both the Planning Commission and the Assembly. Both of those hearings will be open to the public.

The plan is available to everyone on the city’s website and also at all of the Juneau Public Libraries, the City Clerk’s office or the Community Development Department office in the Marine View building. Residents should direct comments to Maclean at jill.maclean@juneau.org or via mail to the CBJ Community Development Department at 155 S. Seward Street.
