After Day 1 of the Capital Invitational track and field meet, the Juneau-Douglas High School girls are in the lead with 37 points.

The Sitka Wolves lead the boys with 34 points.

The invitational, held at Thunder Mountain High School, features eight teams from around Southeast: TMHS, JDHS, Sitka, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Gustavus, Haines and Skagway.

Sophmores Sadie Tuckwood and Anna Iverson both eclipsed the 12-minute mark in the 3200-meter run, the first race of the weekend. Tuckwood came in first with a time of 11 minutes, 5 seconds, close to 30 seconds faster than her time at the Sitka Invitational last weekend. Iverson finished in 11:56.

TMHS freshman Hannah Deer impressed in her first home meet, rounding out the top-5 with a 12:56.

One Crimson Bear, junior Arne Ellefson-Carnes, went under 10 minutes in a wickedly-fast boys 3200. Ellefson-Carnes and Sitka’s Dominic Baciocco and Skyler McIntyre finished within three seconds of one another. Baciocco won in 9:44, while Ellefson-Carnes clocked a 9:47.

JDHS junior Bailey Wery Tagaban jumped well in her season debut. Wery Tagaban won the girls triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, 6 inches and also qualified for the 100-meter dash finals on Saturday morning.

Petersburg sophomore Isaac Taylor won the boys triple jump by over two feet with his 40’ 9” mark. JDHS freshman Dawson Hickok’s 34’ 5’’ jump was good for fifth place.

Four competitors tied for first in the girls high jump: Skagway’s Jennifer Hansen, Petersburg’s Kendra Conrad, TMHS’ Gabby Sloan and JDHS’ Ayah Frayley. All four reached 4’ 2”.

Petersburg sophomore Isaac Taylor won the boys high jump with his 5’ 6” mark.

Gustavus senior Matthew Tua’au and Sitka junior Jessica Davis each placed first in the discus.
