The Seymour Canal herring sac-roe fishery was put on 2-hour notice at 9 p.m on Monday. The Division of Commercial Fisheries flew an aerial survey over Seymour Canal and Tenakee Inlet Tuesday morning. They reported a diminishing of a herring spawn witnessed in preceding days. Active spawn covered 0.3 nautical miles near Crab Bay.
Seymour Canal held abundant marine predators, according to a Fisheries press release. The agency reported no schools of herring or herring spawn.
Commercial Fisheries said it will continue to monitor herring “although distribution of Juneau area herring updates will be interrupted until department staff return from the field.”
