ANCHORAGE — The Catholic Social Services is set to receive a legislative citation honoring the group’s work with refugees.

Rep. Berta Gardner plans to present a citation, passed by the Legislature earlier this year, on Friday, during a celebration of World Refugee Day in Anchorage.

Gardner was a prime sponsor of the citation, which praises the group’s refugee assistance program as providing a “sturdy bridge” for refugees to acquire the skills they need for success in this country.

COOS BAY, Oregon (AP) — Several thousand Oregon Coast residents on alert after last year’s devastating earthquake in Japan took part in their first tsunami evacuation drill Thursday, stopping what they were doing and walking uphill to assembly points where volunteers handed out bottles of water and grab-bags of essentials.

Unlike a real tsunami, there were no sirens and no tremors from a massive offshore earthquake in the towns of Coos Bay, North Bend and Charleston.

Herr, impressed with the natural beauty that surrounds his Nanticoke-Westside Parish of the United Methodist Church, thought the beauty of the area, concern for the environment, spirituality and artistic skills could come together for the betterment of the community.

An art contest, he envisioned, could pull everything together.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Prosecutors have accused a Vancouver, Wash., man and three other people with leading an international conspiracy to manufacture and sell designer drugs online and to stores that earned them $5 million between 2009 and earlier this month.

Ryan Scott, 31, had shipments of merchandise from Peru labeled as incense, “burial powder” or insecticide, all of which government agents seized in February 2011 and said were actually a synthetic drug that imitates the high of cocaine and Ecstasy, the Oregonian reports (http://is.gd/Ynf0sH ).
