Letter: Geniuses by comparison?

Kate Troll’s opinion article on Page A9 of Sunday’s Empire entitled, “A Tale of Two Types of Republicans,” recited a vacuous litany of tired and stale Democratic talking points. Troll quotes David Brooks of the New York Times as an expert on Republican politics and the Tea Party. Really, one might as well seek medical advice from the Christian Science Sentinel.

Perhaps a more fitting juxtaposition would be between Thomas Jefferson and the current leader of the Democratic Party, President Teleprompter. In the Declaration of July 4, 1776, Jefferson cites certain injuries and usurpations to a candid world; “He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.” In the same document Jefferson notes that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.

Perhaps Troll has been on Pluto for the last 18 months and is unaware of the overwhelming unpopularity of Obamacare as evidenced by the historic 2010 elections. Troll believes that the tea party is part of the Republican Party. In fact, the tea party is comprised of Libertarians, Independents, Republicans, and yes, even some Democrats. In short, Americans. These same Americans were aptly described by Col. Isaac Barré, an Irish-born British soldier who fought in America during the French and Indian War. During the Stamp Act Debate, as a member of Parliament, he warned his colleagues of the Americans, “They are a people jealous of their liberties and who will vindicate them if ever they should be violated…”

Troll questions the legitimacy of tea party scholarship and its intellectual authority. Perhaps she has a point but she may never know if she only consults experts within the New York Times. Consider this, in just 30 months in office President Barack Obama has made President Jimmy Carter look competent and President George W. Bush a genius.

What Troll and the rest of us are observing is that this same spirit described by Barre’ is alive and well.
