Whether or not the plastic bag initiative that a number of Juneau citizens are proposing is perfectly crafted, the Empire editorial “Bag this lousy idea” misses the mark.
There can be little doubt that plastic in our oceans is a serious world-wide problem, and maybe even a more immediate problem for a community like Juneau that relies on the sea for fishing and for tourism. So the editorial’s implication that this is not a “serious public” issue deserving of serious consideration is off base.
We should listen respectfully to those who ask our town to consider this initiative rather than cast them as part of the “obsessively eco-friendly fringe,” as did the editorial. After a civil give and take, the voters can make up their minds whether this particular initiative is a good idea or not.
But name-calling will not be helpful in that process.
