I watched with interest the recent vice presidential debate. In particular, I was struck by the portion of the debate when the moderator questioned the candidates about their Catholic faith and how it impacts their view on abortion in our country. Congressman Paul Ryan said that he looks to his faith to help him form his conscience to being pro-life, and that he is pro-life because of reason and science. Vice President Joseph Biden said that he also upholds his Catholic pro-life stance and believes that life begins at conception but he would not want to impose his personally held beliefs on others as a public official and supports legalized abortion.
From my perspective, and as one of the Shepherd’s within the Catholic Church, I believe that it is disingenuous for politicians, many of them Catholic, who say that they are personally opposed to abortion but do not want to impose their beliefs on others. Now, if opponents of slavery would have thought the same way about the abolition of slavery as some of our politicians today think about abortion, I cringe to think how much further we would have to work for the basic understanding of life, liberty and freedom. How much further behind would we be in civil rights and the understanding of human dignity if they were to have said that he personally was against the slavery of African Americans but did not want to impose their moral stance on slave-owners so that they and everyone else could have the ability to choose? If that were the case, I do not believe we would have an African-American president today. It is important to have politicians of character who uphold “the law of nature and nature’s God” without being swayed by popular opinion.
Vice President Biden and Congressman Ryan share a common faith, but they have different political philosophies. However, Catholics, both those in public office and voters making political choices, may not neglect or deny their fundamental moral responsibility to uphold the sacredness and dignity of human life, from conception to natural death. This is paramount to our understanding how we address the other areas of life. To defend marriage as defined by God as an institution between one man and one woman is also a fundamental value for society. To promote and defend the welfare of the poorest and most vulnerable in our society and to work for the common good are also mandated by the teaching of the Catholic Church.
That being said, each vice presidential candidate has been inconsistent in the ways in which they have followed the moral teaching of the Catholic Church. Vice President Biden, while stating that he believes, as his Church does, that life begins at conception, and while professing his personal opposition to abortion, supports the virtually unlimited right to abortion that has resulted in deaths of millions of unborn children since the tragic Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. In addition to this position of his in conflict with the teaching of the Church, Vice President Biden has also come out in support of legalizing same-sex marriage.
By way of contrast, Congressman Ryan has been a resolute advocate of Catholic moral teaching on the defense of the unborn and traditional marriage between one man and one woman. However, the Federal budget that he has proposed could do harm to the poor and vulnerable by neglecting their legitimate needs. For example, Congressman Ryan proposed a budget that has received a critique by the Domestic Justice and Human Development and International Justice and Peace committees of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, stating that “a just spending bill cannot rely on disproportionate cuts in essential services to poor and vulnerable persons.”
Only through a right understanding of the moral order will we be able to live in freedom, peace and liberty the inalienable rights granted to us by our Creator. With this understanding, faith and politics do play an important role of integrating the moral order with society so that all might live in peace, freedom and liberty. While democracy is the best means whereby citizens participate in the political governance of the country, it is only successful when first and foremost there is a complete and thorough understanding of human life and dignity. The attack against the very essence of human life, such as abortion, constitutes an intrinsic evil.
While politicians will decide on how they integrate their faith into their politics, it is important for us, as believers and non-believers alike, to decide how we should uphold the common good and a natural moral order by exercising our right to vote.

OK, you tell me when you think human biological life begins and how that is made possible without conception.
And as for "mantra" there isn't any. It is merely common sense. One has to be a person, first, then born in the United States to have citizenship bestowed on him or her. There is no ceremonial bestowment of that citizenship; it comes automatically, invisibly, with birth to only "persons," not non-persons. While citizenship is invisible, being a "person" isn't. You tell me when one biologically becomes a person.

After the semicolon the XIV Amendment continues, "nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."
It doesn't continue saying "nor shall any State deprive any citizen," it returns to talking about those who become citizens, i.e., persons. And being a person doesn't occur because you were born, it occurs because you were conceived by a human female egg and a human male sperm and that made you a new person.

So far from you I get nothing but dismissal, insults and lack of any common sense. This is a two way street. You reject my rational out of hand without countering it with any of your evidence. Why should I agree to continue on your terms when you refuse counter with evidence. Again, my academic training is in science. I love the truth and learning. I have not seen a semblance of evidence from you so far of your reasoning when human life begins. Prove to me you're worth my time to continue on with this "discussion."

Remember, the earth is Satan's domain. It won't be God's until Jesus returns. That being the case and His allowing us free will requires each one of us to decide to follow his will or our own. There is also natural law where we sense inside what is right and what is wrong. I can't even imagine that a woman who finds herself pregnant does not know that killing that baby is wrong. I can understand the conflicting feelings she can feel, but for a Catholic who professes God is the creator of life and prays for God's will to be done on earth and to deliver us from evil, she would have to know that is not the right solution to "her problem."

Ah, now I get it. You're referring to my comment to Mike, who has disappeared since I posted it.
Yes, I believe God is the giver of life, and his greatest gift is new life. And I believe Satan is responsible for evil in our lives. Now I don't know why God puts up with Satan, but I don't know why people want to be Democrats, either. Somethings "are just beyond my pay grade" as Democrat Presidential candidate Obama told Pastor Rick Warren in 2008 when asked when he thinks babies should be given human rights. A lot of ''little swimmer girls" have been killed swimming around in their mother's uterus because of him. A a lot of grown ups have been killed also because of him; the most recent our Ambassador to Libby and a couple Navy Seals and another American who went to save our Ambassador and some 30 other people when "our" Commander In Chief wouldn't send in the military to protect them.
But anyway, as for being saved from Satan, I think that there is a lot of science and evidence and common sense that goes into understanding life. And then there is faith. I just finished reading Christopher Hitchens' last book - "Mortality," just to get more insight into a great mind on life and faith, or the absence of it.

God created the earth! Not Satin! We create our own evil. Not Satin! I guess to think it is ok for a child to carry a child to term after being raped by her father or another relative. A child of 13 or 14 will carry the scars of this her for her entire life. She is not mature enough too care for a child as she is still a child herself. I am having trouble with the way you think. You say you are a scientist, and yet it has been proven biologically that inbreeding cause mental retardation and other birth defects. Why should a child of 12 or 13 have to deal that?

I'm not a scientist, I studied biological science in college. As for the example you offered of a young teenage raped by her father having to carry that baby and the potential deformity or disability of such a child, hard cases don't make good law. Such a child could be adopted out to a loving couple who understood the circumstance of that child's existence. As for the young girl having to deal with her experience, all females who have abortions have to deal with their experience. Many try to bury it, which is not healthy. Those who deal with what they "had" to do find comfort in counseling with pro-life groups who can assure her that she is not condemned and they can help her find forgiveness for what she did. Such hard case that you presented are a fraction of 1 percent of abortions. You can do the calculations - 55,000,000 abortions in America since Roe v. Wade, times x% of 1%. That takes care of the "hard cases." The rest are normal healthy human beings that were exterminated that someone else would love to be able to have and care for.
