Empire Editorial: Thumbs-up, Thumbs-down

Thumbs up to Cathie Roemmich, CEO of the Juneau Chamber of Commerce, who has been picked to sit on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Committee of 100. That committee is vital to the national organization’s ability to work for its members.

Thumbs up to Crowley Maritime Corp., new owners of Taku Oil Sales, for keeping Juneau residents employed and vowing to keep thing running the way longtime employee and now President of Taku Oil Jeff Hansen and members of the Jacobsen family have since 1953.

Thumbs up to the decision to replace electrical elements at the Fosbee Apartments. That’s $60,000 well-spent dollars.

Thumbs down to that wily mosquito that lured poor Wasabi the cat to plummet 11 floors from the Mendenhall Tower apartment building, but thumbs up to the fine vets who put her back in purring order.

Thumbs up to all those involved in trying to disentangle that humpback whale we were keeping track of last week. Removing fishing nets and gear from a moving mammal is a daunting and dangerous task.

Thumbs up to the folks at Eaglecrest Ski Area, who seem to have everything they need for another successful season up there except the snow.

Thumbs up to those who helped save the Front Street Clinic for another six months. The facility serves a vital role, and a permanent solution is needed.

Thumbs up to the Juneau contingent that attended the Klondike International Road Relay.
