Flood risk

Considering that humankind will now only be capable of affecting the duration of this climate crisis — from extreme drought and wildfires to unpredictable, unprecedented deluges, with ocean rise and its acidification — it may take decades, even centuries, for our atmosphere (actually, the entire planet’s biosphere!) to return to the kind of system stasis experienced just 30 years ago (granting that we intend to remain true to the free-market capitalism our opinion-leading personalities have decided is the only avenue to human development).

We must implement the industry reforms of the National Flood Insurance Program beginning with the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012.

Since FEMA has yet to improve flood risk maps for endangered coastal communities, or on the rural geologic flood plains and, after Colorado, in the mountainous run-off regions, insurance premiums continue to be subsidized by taxpayers, with the low and fixed income victims suffering incalculably.

Earth’s hydrologic cycle will only continue to accelerate; moisturizing until we take concrete action to stem the rate of dew-point increase. Flood insurance is the capital-market solution to address this dilemma and it must stay apace. Until lifestyles can modify!
