Alaska Editorial: Economic march

Posted: October 22, 2013 - 12:00am

The following editorial first appeared in the Ketchikan Daily News:

Economic development marches on in Southeast Alaska.

This time hand in hand with the Yukon.

The State of Alaska and the Government of Yukon joined forces this week to identify and evaluate an economic development corridor between the region and the Yukon. The corridor would be used for telecommunications and transmitting electric power.

The two governments will fund jointly an economic analysis of opportunities on either side of the border as a result of signing an appendix to the existing Alaska-Yukon Intergovernmental Relations Accord.

The agreement will pave the way to improve the potential for the availability of broadband and affordable electricity. It will examine the feasibility of increasing fiber-optic networks that could connect Juneau and maybe even Ketchikan and Prince Rupert.

This is the type of infrastructure that business and industry depends upon and that attracts new ventures that create jobs and build an economy.

The study is an initial step toward such economic development.
