Letter: School board not supporting students

Posted: December 20, 2013 - 1:02am

As a seventh grader at Floyd Dryden Middle School, I feel the school board is not supporting students. I attended the school board meeting Tuesday night for the very first time, so I didn’t really know how to speak up. I plan to sign up at the next meeting to speak about the matter of the teachers’ contract.

As a student, I am quite concerned about this agenda. By not providing a fair contract, the board is asking teachers to work more, with less time to do it. The board’s decision not to settle a teachers contract is also hurting students.

My older brother, who is a junior in high school at Thunder Mountain, can no longer make up tests, work or anything of that matter. I am also concerned about after-school activities. Since teachers only teach during school hours because they have no contract, after-school activities could be canceled. My choir teacher may no longer be able to direct the play I am in.

Another experience the school board is taking away from kids is middle school travel. I went to Ketchikan earlier this year for soccer. It was more than amazing — I loved every bit of it. My first ferry ride, seeing new things, walking around town and playing soccer against new people changed how I look at the other communities because they are not all the same. I couldn’t believe that the board cut travel.

Why change FDMS’s policy when it was Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School that said no to travel? My younger brothers can no longer have fun or have an experience like I did because of this policy change. It would be nice if the school board would give all teachers a 2 percent raise. It means everything. Also, the women who spoke about honesty during the board meeting is more than right. She’s being honest — now the school board needs to be as well.

I was also surprised on how certain board members were outwardly rude toward teachers at the board meeting. Certain comments and gestures surprised me from board members who should be acting properly and more professional. No contract, cutting travel and rude behavior in meetings tells me the current school board is not supportive of teachers or students.
