Walker and Kelly: If you want to be leaders, show us a balanced budget

I have been following the Juneau Empire editorials on the state budget. Gov. Bill Walker says we need to tax the public to balance the budget. The Senate President, Pete Kelly, says that we don’t. The big unknowns seem to be how long the reserves will last and how much more of the state government can be cut.

I think that both should build budgets that cover the next three budget years. Let’s see how long the reserves would last under their plans. Let’s see what part of government can be cut under their plans. We have a $2.7 billion budget shortfall. Both men should show us how they would balance that shortfall. If they want to be leaders, then show us a balanced budget.
