I’m glad Jack Cadigan prefaced his letter to the editor with a lengthy statement about how staunch a supporter of free speech he is, so that we didn’t mistake his later remarks as being intolerant of the free speech rights of the editorial cartoon he objected to or the right of the Empire to print it. Yes, the Empire has a right not to print it. They also have the right to print it if they choose to.
Apparently Cadigan feels that Christians should be exempt from criticism or being lampooned for supporting a man who shows no sign of a religious impulse or a moral stance that he doesn’t betray with the next tweet.
I was also amused to hear the Empire described as left wing. Is this the same Empire that endorsed Donald Trump for president? Apparently the Empire’s editorial stance is significantly left of Mr. Cadigan. Well, the Empire is somewhat to the right of me, so perhaps they are doing a decent job of representing the range of opinion out there, including the cartoonist’s questioning the continued support by the religious right for our p— grabbing, xenophobic, religiously-intolerant president.
