Governor declares a week for invasive weeds awareness

Posted: June 16, 2011 - 5:00pm

Gov. Sean Parnell declared June 19-25 would be Invasive Weeds Awareness Week by executive proclamation May 31.

The goal of Invasive Weeds Awareness Week is to raise awareness about how invasive weeds affect Alaska and what can be done to stop them.

The environment and the balance of ecosystems are very important to Alaska’s economy, be it agriculture, subsistence, tourism or other endeavors, he stated in the proclamation. Invasive weeds negatively impact habitats wherever they take root, and currently white sweetclover, Canada thistle, perennial sowthistle and orange hawkweed are among the invasive weeds affecting Alaskan agriculture and forests, he stated.

Governor Parnell made the proclamation with the intent of encouraging Alaskans to pay more attention to how invasive weeds spread and how they can be prevented.

He encouraged the public to learn more about invasive weeds and how they can help prevent their spread during the week.
