Spots left for Faster Freestyle swimming clinic

Local swimmers still have a chance to sign up for the Faster Freestyle swimming clinic to be held Wednesday and Thursday, July 20-21, at Augustus Brown Swimming Pool.

According to Jamie Bursell, clinic coordinator, this year’s instructor, Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen, is known world-wide for being an accomplished swimmer. He said Pipes-Neilsen has set over 200 masters world records and is equally talented as an instructor. She will be arriving in Juneau from Kona, Hawaii to lead the clinic.

“(She) uses her high energy to deliver a fun and fast-paced clinic woven with personal experience,” Bursell stated in an email.

Through drills and technique, Bursell said Pipes-Neilsen will teach clinic participants how to be faster and more efficient swimmers.

Wednesday’s session is currently full, but there is still room in Thursday’s session, which will run from 5-8 p.m.

Buckwheat Classic registration opens

Registration is now open for the 31st annual Buckwheat Ski Classic. The cross-country ski race will be held on March 25 on the Log Cabin Ski Trails north of Skagway and include 50K, 25K and 10K classic races as well as a 5K kids race.

The season for marten, mink, weasel and river otter in Unit 4 (Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof Islands) ended Wednesday. Beaver season remains open through April 30.
