Southeast area sport fish report for the week of Aug. 22

Posted: August 25, 2011 - 4:26pm

Juneau: Juneau area anglers are currently putting in an average of 116 rod-hours per king salmon in the Juneau area. Last year at this time it required 686 rod-hours and the five-year average was 281 rod-hours per fish. Hot spots for the Juneau area are the North Shelter Island, and South Shelter Island areas.

Coho currently require an average of 6 rod-hours per fish. At this time last year fisherman were putting in an average of 5 rod-hours per fish and the 5-year average was 6 hours per fish. Hot spots for coho include North and South Shelter Island and Point Retreat areas.

Anglers targeting halibut are currently taking 6 rod-hours per fish. Both last year and the 5-year average were at 6 rod-hours per halibut. Hot spots for halibut were Benjamin Island, South Shelter and the Breadline areas.

Southeast: Even with the sometimes stormy weather reducing fishing effort at some of the ports (such as Juneau, Skagway and Sitka), the sampled fishing effort last week ranged from below 240 rod-hours in Wrangell to over 1,500 rod-hours in Ketchikan, Sitka, Gustavus and Yakutat. The coho salmon and halibut sport fisheries remain good to excellent at most ports, while the Chinook, pink and chum salmon fisheries are slowing down.

Harvest rates for Chinook salmon last week ranged from 10 rod-hours per fish in Sitka to 874 rod-hours in Yakutat, and were better than or equal to the five-year average at the ports of Craig/Klawock, Petersburg, Sitka, Juneau, Skagway and Gustavus. No harvested Chinook salmon were encountered by our creel survey personnel in Wrangell. The Chinook salmon fishery on the outer coast will continue to have the benefit of access to a mixed-stock Chinook salmon fishery.

All sampled ports encountered harvested halibut, with harvest rates ranging from 2 rod-hours per harvested halibut in Gustavus to 6 rod-hours per halibut in Ketchikan, Wrangell, Juneau and Elfin Cove. The harvest rates were better than or equal to the five-year average at all the sampled ports except Ketchikan and Elfin Cove.

Coho salmon were encountered by our creel surveys at all ports last week, with harvest rates ranging from 1 rod-hour per harvested coho salmon in Craig/Klawock, Sitka, Elfin Cove and Yakutat, to 6 rod-hours in Juneau. The harvest rates were better than or equal to the five-year average at all the sampled ports.

Harvested pink salmon were encountered by our creel survey personnel last week at all sampled ports except Wrangell, with harvest rates ranging from 4 rod-hours per harvested pink salmon in Ketchikan to 116 rod-hours in Juneau. The harvest rates were better than or equal to the five-year average at all the sampled ports except Juneau.

Harvested chum salmon were encountered at all sampled ports except Juneau and Yakutat, with harvest rates ranging from 7 rod-hours per harvested chum salmon in Ketchikan to 407 rod-hours in Elfin Cove. The harvest rates were better than or equal to the five-year average at all the sampled ports except Juneau, Elfin Cove and Yakutat.
