Juneau's only ultra race runs Aug. 20

The Southeast Roadrunners are hosting Juneau’s only ultra race on Saturday, Aug. 20.

This 50 kilometer race, fittingly titled the Nifty Fifty, consists of mostly local trails, with portion of the race being on the road. It begins at 9 a.m. at the Eagle Beach picnic shelter. The race finishes in the same location. Participants are invited to run it solo or as a relay on a team of two or three. The course consists of three legs, on the Windfall Lake Trail, the Herbert Glacier Trail and on the road. Pre-register at Pavitt Health and Fitness Center, either location of the JRC/Alaska Club, or at the Nugget Alaskan Outfitter. For more information, email keithblevy@gmail.com.


Buckwheat Classic registration opens

Registration is now open for the 31st annual Buckwheat Ski Classic. The cross-country ski race will be held on March 25 on the Log Cabin Ski Trails north of Skagway and include 50K, 25K and 10K classic races as well as a 5K kids race.

Unit 4 fur season to end

The season for marten, mink, weasel and river otter in Unit 4 (Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof Islands) ended Wednesday. Beaver season remains open through April 30.

Geologist Jim Baichtal will discuss revising old theories regarding how life adapted to Southeast Alaska’s ancient ice sheets during today’s Fireside Lecture at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.
