Eagle Glacier to Davies Creek Portion of Unit 1C Closed to Mountain Goat Hunting

Biologists with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game in Douglas have announced a closure to the mountain goat hunting season under the state registration permit hunt RG012, for that portion of Unit 1(C) from Eagle Glacier and Eagle River north to Davies Creek.

Aerial surveys conducted by ADF&G in August 2011 resulted in a slight increase in mountain goat numbers from the 2010 surveys for the area between Eagle Glacier and Eagle River and Davies Creek. Based on the survey information, a guideline harvest of one to two goats was established for the area. As of Tuesday, Oct. 4, the reported harvest is one male goat. Any additional harvest of goats in this area could have long term negative impacts on the health of this goat herd.

An emergency order was issued that closed the mountain goat season in this area on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

All other mountain goat hunting regulations in Unit 1(C) remain unchanged and are not affected by this emergency order.


Buckwheat Classic registration opens

Registration is now open for the 31st annual Buckwheat Ski Classic. The cross-country ski race will be held on March 25 on the Log Cabin Ski Trails north of Skagway and include 50K, 25K and 10K classic races as well as a 5K kids race.

The season for marten, mink, weasel and river otter in Unit 4 (Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof Islands) ended Wednesday. Beaver season remains open through April 30.
