Last day of the year marks hunting, trapping closures

North Chichagof trapping and Unit 4 goat and deer hunting

Hunters have only two more days to bag a deer or mountain goat in Unit 4, Admiralty Island, Baranof Island and Chichagof Island; the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has announced that Saturday will be the season’s final day.

Unsuccessful hunters and hunters who registered to hunt for mountain goats on Baranof Island but did not hunt must return their completed hunt reports to the ADF&G office in Sitka by the close of business Jan. 17, 2012, or report online at

The Sitka black-tailed deer state hunting season closure includes all of Admiralty, Baranof, and Chichagof islands, as well as smaller islands within the unit.

Federal subsistence deer season continues on federal lands until Jan. 31, unless closed earlier by the U.S. Forest Service District Rangers. Federally qualified subsistence users continuing to hunt into the January season are reminded to obtain a valid 2012 hunting license.

Additional information and maps concerning the federal subsistence season and hunter qualifications can be gathered by contacting the USFS district office in Sitka online at

The last day of December also marks the end of trapping season on North Chichagof for marten, mink and weasel.

Trapping will close in the Chichagof area east of Idaho Inlet, north of Trail River and Tenakee Inlet and north of a line from the headwaters of Trail River to the head of Tenakee Inlet.

The remainder of Unit 4 is open to trapping for river otter, marten, mink and weasel through Feb. 15, 2012. Beaver season remains open through April 30.

Pelts of marten, river otter and beaver must be sealed by a department representative within 30 days after the close of the season.
