This week’s Fireside lecture at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center will uncover the riches of soils with Dave D’Amore from the U.S. Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Forestry Sciences Lab in Auke Bay.
According to D’Amore soil is one of the most under-appreciated resources in the world. Soils provide the fundamental nutrients for producing food, fuel and fiber as well as filtering water. Life would not be possible without soils, but people generally know very little about how soils form and function because they are not easily seen. This lecture will provide a background on the basics of soils, their relationship to human health and well-being, and give some local examples of how soils help sustain terrestrial and aquatic resources in the coastal temperate rainforest of the North Pacific coast.
Lectures begin at 6:30 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. There is no charge and the public is welcome to attend.
